“Good Fences Make Good Neighbors”

Hmm…what have we here? Has Israel started a trend? My heavens, can’t imagine an entity less likely to be imitated, especially by her enemies, but it appears to be true.

Spain plans to build a third high-security fence between its enclave Melilla and Morocco as an added measure to keep out immigrants who have repeatedly stormed the barriers in recent weeks, Interior Ministry delegate Jose Fernandez Chacon said Tuesday
Seems like the great unwashed and unwanted hordes, desperate for work, are risking death and dismemberment:
Hundreds of poor sub-Saharan African immigrants gathered in northern Morocco have stormed the fences repeatedly over the past two weeks in a bid to enter Europe. Five immigrants were killed in a similar charge last week at Ceuta, Spain's other enclave on the northern Moroccan coast. Both city enclaves already have twin 3-meter (10-foot) razor fences around their perimeters.
Sounds like a return to the Middle Ages, doesn’t it? Except for that part about the razor wire — which the medieval city fathers would’ve used had they had it.

Meanwhile, not too far away,
Egypt has started to build a security fence around the Red Sea resort of Sharm al-Sheikh to try to stop attacks on the town, security officials say.
The officials said the fence would stretch for 20km (12 miles) and force vehicles wanting to enter the town to pass through one of four checkpoints.
More than 60 people were killed in July when suicide bombers launched attacks outside two hotels and a market.
Yes, it does sound like Israel gave everyone else a great idea. Clever rascals, those Zionists.

How about some big fences at our own border.

Usurped? Israel obtained that land after in a war of defence against the surrounding Arab countries. Imeediately after that war ended, Israel entered in to discussions with those countries to arrange a peace treaty, which would have included handing the land back. The problem is, those arab nations didn't want a peace treaty with Israel; they wanted Israel to disappear, and so they couldn't agree to any of Israel's requests. No treaty was formally signed, and so Israel kept hold of the land.

Simple really.

Social commentators used to say that things happened first in California and then spread throughout the nation. Now I'm starting to think that Israel may have taken California's place as a trend setter.

Another Israeli first, now fogotten. In December 1992 Israel, after suffering an upsurge in Islamic Terrorism, and not knowing how to deal with Islamists in Israel, decided to "deport" 400+ of them, but could not find other countries that would take them. So they created a tent city for them in Southern Lebanon which was then under Israeli control.

This was done under an Israeli government led by Yitzak Rabin (not a right winger). Lot's of unfavorable international press coverage, requests by the International Red Cross to provide assistance, appeals to the Israeli Supreme Court, etc.

This same problem appears to have come up recently in the UK. The UK wants to deport some of the worst of the worst Islamists, but the to-be-deported islamist's country of origin either doesn't want them or may torture them if they are returned (which is a no-no for UK leaders). So what to do?

Well, as Israel tried to do in 1992, first get them out of the country--no more freedom of movement with surveillance--and if no other country wants them, create a temporary living area for them while they seek entry elsewhere.

I forget how the Israeli tent city ended. I think some of the internees did find another country to accept them and others eventually got back into then greater Israel. Interestingly, two graduates of Camp South Lebanon, Sheik Yassin and Rantisi (who became or already were #1 and #2 in Hamas), went on to commit much mayhem and murder, until in 2003 the IDF (thankfully) killed them as part of its targeted assasinations.

Dymphna,
A few weeks back, a group of African "immigrants" stormed the fence, and five wound up dead of bullet wounds. Spain, apparently denies their border guards were culpable, but that seems doubtful, doesn't it?

Anyway, the whole story sound similar to the Israeli border situation to me, as well, so I wrote the following on CUANAS:

Spain is evil. They are like Nazis. They need to be condemned by the United Nations. We must ask the question, do the Spaniards, with their arrogant and racist behavior, even deserve a state?
